From NSWMTB - New South Wales Mountain Bike

Welcome to the NSWMTB Trail Advocacy and Maintenance Wiki.

This is a Wiki, you know - just like Wikipedia there.

We hope through collaboration of riders, clubs, groups and of course land and stake holders a repository of trail maintenance information and issues will be built up. Of course, this is mainly aimed at the Australian, and in particular the NSW mountain biking scene.

Advocacy Stories

It's useful to discover how others have gone about liaising with authorities, land mangers, etc.

  • Mountain Biking and conservationMTBAs CEO, Tony Scott is fond of saying "Mountain biking introduces people of conservation." Now President Gillian Duncan has put together a paper and submitted it to several Governing agency's to press home the point.

To read the full submission go to MTBA or down load directly.

  • Hornsby Council Mountain bike park update - Hornsby Shire Mountain Bike Alliance Has now been formed. A major win was achieved at Council meeting on the 10-12-08 with Council agreeing to the need to conduct a feasibility study. Since then HSMBA have been collecting trail ideas from the community and Council have contracted World Trail to provide a review of the area. HSMBA and Council also met with NSW NPWS Management in late April 09. This meeting was extremely positive and productive. This is exciting as NPWS are an important part of this project. Nothing is certain yet but things are heading in the right direction. To be a success the project will require community support. Please register Register your support here and you will be kept updated on progress on what could be a major MTB facility for Northern Sydney.

  • Tourism and National Parks in NSW Taskforce report

The report is in and a lot of positives can be found within it as well as some surprising support found with in submissions by more conservative body's such as the Nature Conservation Council/National Parks Association who wrote "Many protected areas, especially those close to Sydney, are accessible by public transport and many more can be reached easily on bicycle. Other options could be developed. There is enormous potential to promote ‘parks by public transport’ and ‘parks by bike’ through the website and brochures. Emerging conditions (fuel prices, carbon measures) make this a potential winner."

  • Cycling saves Australia $200Mil in Health care study claims
  • A ONCE IN A DECADE CHANCE TO OBTAIN BETTER CYCLING ACCESS TO SYDNEY CATCHMENT AUTHORITY MANAGED LANDS.

The Sydney Catchment Authority (SCA) is carrying out a review of its General Regulations, the rules that govern what can and can't be done in the huge tracts of land they manage or jointly manage to protect Sydney's water supply. This is a once in a decade opportunity to argue for cycling access to roads and management trails that is currently banned. Whilst over the years the cycling community had been promised consultation on the new regulations, the SCA has drafted new regulations without prior consultation and then made these available on May 2 for public comment. The Draft Regulations are even more draconian than the ones they replace and it is vitally important that any riders with an interest in riding classic routes such as Katoomba to Mittagong, make submission on these regulations. A joint submission has been prepared by MTBA and Bicycle NSW and this can be downloaded below. You can also read the Draft Sydney Water Catchment Management Regulation 2008 and associated Regulatory Impact Statement at http://www.sca.nsw.gov.au/home/sidebar/community-consultation/ris-exhibit/public-exhibition-of-the-draft-sydney-water-catchment-management-regulation-2008 Whilst a date of 30 May 2008 is given for Submissions we have been given an extension of one week. So please make submission to regulations@sca.nsw.gov.au by close of business on 6 June 2008.
